Our Roots & Reasons

Eleven years ago, Take A Sistah to Lunch began as a group of mentors for women primarily residing in the shelter system who were facing a transitional phase in their lives. Our initial thought was to share a meal together, while supporting and encouraging each other. Our food cupboard program grew from recognizing that women who left the shelter system have a practical need for food and other staples.

I joined Take A Sistah to Lunch to help me move on, to make my life a better life for me and my children.

We still work to support disadvantaged women and children residing in the greater Philadelphia region’s homeless shelters and low-income neighborhoods. Our all-volunteer team of 10 currently accomplishes this by operating two monthly food cupboards full of healthy produce for families in need.

Eradicating hunger can strengthen a child’s educational foundation. Simply put, well-nourished children are more receptive to learning. Food security and education aren’t just connected—they’re directly related. The Take A Sistah to Lunch team proudly joins other global efforts making a difference in the lives of women and children by fighting hunger, promoting education and restoring dignity.
